“…if it is even possible, to begin with.”
That’s a general misconception that a lot of people have around pain and emotional wounds. Disbelief that a person can really heal from trauma, rejection, depression, a broken heart, or truly move on from their disappointment, grief, or failure.
However, there are two things that I can assure you from experience: emotional healing is always possible, and it will always hurt. Sometimes even worse than the original experience that got you to where you are at present, but you can and will attain it, I promise.
You are tremendously unique. Stereotypes might try to discredit this but it’s the truth, plain and simple. And based on this, your healing process will certainly and 100% differ from another person’s process, regardless of how similar your experiences may be.
There is no time limit for healing. It’s very likely that you can be healing all your life. But then there will be two extremes to your healing: a fresh wound phase and a scar phase.
The former may hurt like there’s no tomorrow, just like a fresh wound, but there will always be an end of the tunnel. And even if you emerge with little scars or larger ones, those will be the signs that you truly are healing.
Keep these in mind:
Time does heal.
During your process, take one step at a time and only when you’re ready.
Emotional healing is not an all-or-nothing type of thing. Even if you’re experiencing the smallest of improvements, they are still very valuable parts of your journey.
Patience and persistence will take you far, and so will setting realistic goals for yourself.
If you face a setback, no matter the magnitude, keep in mind that it is still a part of the process and learn from it.
Self-care and self-love should always be major priorities for you.
Do not be afraid to ask for help, or even be the help that someone else needs. You are not meant to be alone in your journey back to emotional health. Be open to support from the people that you can trust.
And if you ever feel discouraged, you can recite this to yourself:
Take it easy,
Take it slow,
Take a deep breath every step I go.
Getting there
Might take a while
But I’m certain that one day, I will smile.
xoxo
