A budding need has been discovered by family therapists for the study of culture-specific family patterns. This is not for the purpose of forming stereotypes. Rather, it serves numerous positive purposes such as rebuilding family bonds, creating stable living environments, and encouraging families to stick together using information gathered from this research.
The goal, at the end of the day, is the preservation of the true essence of the concept of “family”. The dynamics in the Black family exhibit several similarities and just as many distinctions from other culture-specific families. In the light of being one of the minority races, the Black family not only faces internal struggles but also external ones, including but not exclusive to economic struggles, educational struggles, socio-cultural struggles, grapples with crime and law enforcement systems, discrimination, and systemic inequality.
One of the most sensitive members of the Black family is the children. Children and their well-being are largely impacted by their surroundings. By nature, children are born into their race and their families. However, it is the way they are nurtured that will determine how they will turn out in their adult lives. Hence, it is important that the children in Black families are nurtured in stable environments and by cohesive family units.
Well-educated parents are more likely to create a more positive home environment for the family to be nurtured in. Studies have linked higher levels of parental education with phenomena such as more economically stable homes, higher parental warmth and responsiveness, increased provision of learning materials and experiences to the children at home, increased school readiness, and improved educational and employment outcomes throughout a child’s life. These studies prove the significance of education not just for the children in Black families, but also for the parents.
Research over the past several decades has revealed that family structure also has a strong effect on child outcomes. To be precise, growing up with only one parent has been generally associated with several negative outcomes. Compared to children living with their married parents, children in single-parent families are at a greater risk of behavioral issues, poor health, low self-esteem, alcohol and substance abuse, risky sexual behavior, truancy, and dropping out from school. This, as well, underscores the importance of a cohesive family unit.
Some of the ways to build a stable and cohesive family unit and strengthen the Black family dynamic include spending time together. Quality time strengthens and rebuilds family bonds, and offers a sense of security and belonging to everyone in the family. Time for family traditions such as family game nights and planning small vacations for the family are lovely ways to start.
Having shared meals is another form of quality time but with a distinct significance of its own. When the family eats any meal together free of distractions, it provides an avenue to reinforce communication between the members. Fostering a strong support system in the family so that every member has each other’s backs through the good and the bad times is also very important.
Also, supporting each other’s interests encourages cohesion in a family. Assisting your partner with their work, attending children’s soccer games, reading a book series with your siblings, keeping the house quiet so an elder one can study for their exam, or helping the little ones collect Barbie dolls or Spiderman figurines—anything to support the interests of a fellow family member is a great way to also foster strong family bonds.
Lastly, the most important of them all is showing love and affection. Anyone that experiences a wealth of TLC from the people in their family is bound to thrive. Furthermore, when children learn to be loving and kind right from home, they become the best kind of people when they grow up, and in turn, they are capable of showing these emotions to other people as well.
